Hello, Class.
I wanted to give you more than enough notice, so I hope you review this email before tomorrow afternoon, but we WILL NOT meet as a class tomorrow, Wednesday, November 2nd. I have a personal matter to attend to tomorrow afternoon that is keeping me from campus. That being said, please make sure you review the PowerPoint presentation on Rhetorical Mode: Extended Definition essay and the assignment sheet for Post #5, Extended Definition (DUE, 11/7).
Both the presentation and assignment sheet can be found under "Shared Documents" on http://mybcc.net
I will be on campus Thursday and Friday, and I am more than happy to discuss Post #5 with you whether it be via email, phone call and/or face-to face. My office hours for the rest of this week are as follows:
Thursday: 7:30am-8:20am & 10:30am-1:00pm
Friday: 7:30am-8:30am & 10:30am-1:00pm
Also, I was planning on getting back your Mid-Term Reports this Wednesday. I will give them to you next Monday (11/7) but if you want to know your point value (for peace of mind), please email me in the next day or two and I will reply with your score than give you the hard-copy next week.
Enjoy the day off, BUT get to work on Post #5 and keep in touch if you need any help!

Post #5, DUE Monday, November 7th
Post #5 - Extended Definition Essay
An extended definition includes the basic parts of a formal definition:
However, it goes beyond that, adapting whatever methods of development (i.e. examples, description, comparison/contrast, process analysis, classification, analogy, negation) to best suit the term it defines.
· Write a 750(ish) word essay in which you give an extended definition of a thing, a concept, or a general phenomenon. (Visit the PowerPoint presentation on Extended Definition, under shared documents, to review)
· Please do not use the example from class, i.e. “What is Love?”
DUE: Post to your Writing Portfolio by Monday, November 7th.
Please email and/or come for an office visit if you have any questions or concerns.
Post #4 (make sure it's a new post)
Post #4, Revision of “Integrating Voice in Expository Writing(?)”
For this assignment, you will revise your developing draft of “Integrating Voice in Expository Writing(?)”, i.e. Post #3. With all the materials from the Writing Groups/Peer Review, and your experience with this unit, you now have a unique task ahead of you.
We’ve reviewed and criticized the use of first-person narrative in expository writing for the last week and discussed its placement/misplacement in this genre of writing. Now that you’ve had the opportunity to experiment with this manipulation of tone, it’s up to you to decide whether it has value in relationship to your most recent writing assignment.
Without significantly changing content, revise Post #3 focusing on style and tone to make your text more effective overall.
· You may choose to commit to the same style and voice of Post #3, or you may decide to alter your text’s tone by omitting first-person perspective.
What do you need to do to make this more effective, appealing and appropriate to your audience?

Post #3, Course Reading and Next Week
Post #3, “Integrating Voice in Expository Writing”
· Due date: Post to your Student Blog on Monday, October 24th
· Bring 4 hard copies of Post #3 to class on Monday, October 24th
· Requirements: 750-1000 word
· Reading #5, “Introduction to Participatory Journalism” on MyBc
___________________________________________________________
For this assignment, you will produce an expository text with a strong integration of author voice via first-person narrative/perspective (using “I”). In other words, you will create an original text similar in style and tone to what we did in class, i.e. the second article from class entitled “Stick it to Me” on acupuncture. Please note, YOU ARE NOT rewriting an existing article but creating your own from scratch surrounding an issue/event of your choosing. One you choose an issue/event, think about how you might integrate your own personal ideas/experiences without establishing an argument, i.e. stay away from “I feel”, “I believe”, “In my opinion”, etc.
· Don’t forget to post on your student blog on Monday, October 24th as well as bring 4 hard copies to class for a writing group/peer review workshop.
It is imperative that everyone comes to class prepared on Monday, October 24th since I will be announcing a very important assignment for the following week. We will also review our rubric for your Student Writing Portfolio.
· Reminder, we WILL NOT have class on Wednesday, October 26th due to a faculty planning day so attendance and preparation on Monday are vital.
As always, I am here to help so please email me or come visit my office if you have any questions and/or concerns.
